Today, thetruthaboutdow.org would like to introduce to you Honda Element: I Changed My Camper Conversion After Six Months . Following along are instructions in the video below:
“My name is sage. My dog kopeck and i lived in a 2006 honda element element for eight months before moving into an airstream trailer for six months. We had platform bed that went all the way back and just had storage underneath and then about six months. And i changed the set up to what you currently see here.
So. I m gonna give you a little tour of the new set up and discuss some of the reasons why i made the changes i m gonna show you some of the new features one of the things that i struggled with a little bit with my previous set up is that everything was underneath the bed platform. So anytime. I needed food or clothing or cooking.
Supplies or whatever. I had to get out of the car go all the way around open up the back and pull things out some of the stuff was even buried behind other stuff. So it was a little bit inconvenient for just simple tasks like changing so when i did this new setup. I wanted to make sure things were more accessible from inside the vehicle.
So almost everything you can access from sitting inside. The car on the bench. Here so over here we ve got cooking supplies. We ve got a jet boil pots and pans in the back down here.
We ve got a water jug with a little spigot on it and then a little opening right here. So that this baker can stick out and then it just lifts. The bowls out and i need to refill it down on the bottom. We ve got some some winter.
Hiking boots as well as some other winter. Gear snow pants and snow jacket..
This compartment here. We ve got some stuff that i d rather have a little more hidden away so we ve got electronics and some other valuables and then this functions as a table surface with these chains here so i can use it to put my laptop on and type away or to eat a meal down here we have kopacz dog food dog leash got some books and other miscellaneous supplies the configuration of everything on the shelf. And that was maybe a little bit different from how i might have it if i was still living in the vehicle full time for example. I specifically made these shelves for clothes.
So i would just fold my shirts up in here. And and pants up and and then put shoes and stuff on the bottom. But since i m not living in at full time it doesn t make as much sense to fill all that space with clothing. So all my clothes just goes into one and i can bring some more luxury items and camping gear.
So over here. We ve got clothing in my bag. There and then we ve got like a day pack for hiking in my growler. Which is empty and then on the bottom we ve got sleeping bag and then this one is just miscellaneous camping gear and then up top we ve got my guitar.
I m not totally sold on this set up for it yeah. But it stays this nice and secure. It s bungeed in um. But i m working on some other other solutions for it since i couldn t do a platform bed and self access to everything from the inside.
I went with this kind of bench design that pulls out to a bed. So now i can sit up almost fully. I have to slouch just a little bit and then it also turns into a bed. So the way that it works you have a front piece and a back piece.
And when they re in the bench mode. They re kind of interlocked together like this but then when you pull it out for a bed..
The slats kind of separate and then you have a platform like this that the bed can go on so i ll give you a quick demonstration. You just pull out the front piece like that slide super easily and move the two cushions into place. And that s the front part and then there s a part over here that i ll show you to extend the length of the bed. So this this part can also be done from inside the car.
But silly little easier to show you with the camera from from this angle. So i ve got this box here. And it serves as this serves as a storage for dried food and that kind of stuff. But also serves as support for the bed platform.
So we just push the seat forward take this little let s hang a little platform that just supports one corner lands on the platform kind of pushes up against the back of the seats fits on that box there too so it s the same height. It s dirty and that kind of extends the length of the bed. So now it s like it s like six foot eight or something like that so it s it s long enough for me and wide enough for both me and kopeck. So it really works out perfectly one of the features of my setup that i had covered in my previous video was my solar solar panel and the system and i thought i might might as well cover it again because there s always a lot of questions on solar.
So i have a hundred watt solar panel on top of the flexible panel so it can bend up to thirty degrees. So it takes the shape of the roof of my car. It s super slim you can hardly see it and so that 100 watt solar panel runs down through these wires here to the charge controller which helps prevent the battery from becoming over or under charge and an alert see when it does it also helps me monitor what s going on so right now. I ve got one one blinking light.
Which means my my battery is charging. If both of these were blinking. It means to be in float charge. Which which means.
It s fully charged and it s just only absorbing enough energy to maintain natural loss from the charge controller. It runs down to the battery..
This is a 35 amp. Hour battery and the battery runs up to the inverter inverter takes it from dc to ac. So that i can i can run standard household plugs off of it so my computer. My phone camera battery that kind of thing easily plugs into.
Here it also has two 31 amp. Usb ports on it so i ve got a total of four ways to charge off of this i m only ever using two so what does a hundred watt solar panel and a thirty five amp hour battery look like practically how much charge can you get out of it for four normal devices. It s hard to quantify and it really depends on on usage. But for the most part i can keep my phone charged daily.
My computer daily or every other day. My camera battery and like a fan on really hot days. I can have all those things on this system and not not over draining the battery. I do live in california.
Where it s sunnier so if you live in a in a less sunny area. You might have a little trouble you might want to a larger battery. And maybe. 150 watt panel.
An additional feature to this new setup is that i decided not to put a backer on my my shelf from the inside. And the reason being is that if i open up this back door. Here. I have access to stuff from the outside as well so these these two shelves in particular.
I can i can grab things sitting on the bench inside or from the outside so with my clothes and my hiking gear it works out perfectly because i can i can just grab it from here and go instead of having to crawl all the way into the back you ” ..
