“This is nathan beignet and thanks a bunch for checking out my new tips writer writer series. I m gonna be doing a bunch of different videos for writers. And anyone who basically slings words for a living or writes. Because they love to these videos are going to be full of kind of cool one off tips that you can use to boost your routine now this first one is a really fun because it s kind of sci fi.
I m gonna teach you very quickly how to speak your copy or speak your writing directly onto the page using your voice. And i found that this is a really great way to overcome writer s block. If you if you struggle with just staring at the screen and trying to figure out what do you want to type and what you want to write this can really help you overcome that very easily and what you do is you essentially all you need is there s a couple different programs you can use but what i m gonna teach you here is using google drive so if you have a free google drive account you can use google docs to do this. And they have a newer built in command for speech to text and that s awesome.
But there s also other programs you can use too i ve tried dictation to i o. Which is really cool this is a good program. We can it s very simple it s all browser based here and you can just literally hit the button and start talking and it ll take you know take notes on what you re saying. It s not hard to set accurate.
But if you speak clearly and enunciate and think your words out before you just say them you can get really great results with this and then you can always save and download. And what but the reason i m using google docs because it s a little bit safer to have something like auto saves and i found it seems to work a little bit better. But you know this is the cool thing is that a lot of people will use a paid program like dragon dictation and that s really cool. But if you want to just try a tip out and not worry about spending a lot of money before you re sure that it works for you this is a great approach to do it.
So i m a big big advocate of using like free software and experimenting with different non paid. Options before you just invest a lot of money so to do this you really do need to have a good quality microphone. I found that having a higher powered mic that s more sensitive will boost your result and give you clear you know you ll get higher accuracy ratings. Because it s gonna be able to pick up what you re saying better you can try with a you know simple mic and probably still get pretty good results.
But i m using a blue yeti right now and a pop filter also just to keep the peace and bees down and it does it works pretty well so i m gonna show you real quick how to do this i ve got my microphone setup. It s plugged into my computer everything s turned on and set. I m wearing headphones. So i will go to google drive and you can just start a new document and it ll load up really quickly you shouldn t take long once that s set to go you go under the tools tab.
So you can actually like you could just type out whatever you re typing here and that s great. But if you go to the tools tab and find this little button..
Here says voice typing. If your mic is plugged in this should work so hit that. And you re going to get a little thing. Here.
That says click to speak. So. What i m gonna do now is actually click that and then just start talking my text now before you start this process. It s really helpful to have some bullet points like if you if you want to like put some time into outlining kind of what you want to talk about that s gonna make this go a lot smoother.
Because you won t have to kind of stop and wonder what to think about and what to say next you can have sort of a quick list of just like here s the talking points. I want to cover and then just go with the flow and get into like the groove of talking it out and one thing. That s cool is i use this sometimes for my freelance articles like if i just want to get a draft out. And i m struggling to like think about what to write a couple quick bullet points to outline the article and i ll just dive in and it works really well.
I also use this for book writing sometimes or just getting rough ideas down. Very quickly you know i ve found that it s much easier to actually go in and edit text that you have rather than trying to stare at the blank screen here and type it out from scratch. Because you can actually see what you have to work with and then you know take the best bits and pull that into a different different document or kind of edit the text. So it s much clearer and nicer.
So let me just dive in and show you how to do this here when if you click the speak here and you re gonna notice it s gonna start picking up my words now you ll see it s not super harbison accurate. But i find that if you actually talk a little bit slower than your normal fast paced. Talking speed and take a moment to kind of enunciate and think your thoughts through as you say them you ll see that it s coming up with pretty solid accuracy rate. And one thing you ll notice here is that i m not actually using any punctuation or other special commands.
Which are built into the program. You also notice that if i pause that it stops and it s not like as recording it it s actually just waiting and listening for my voice. So you can do things like say new paragraph and it ll pop down to the next paragraph and that s kind of cool. I don t really bother with saying things like period or using other specific commands to actually break the punctuation down.
Because i find that breaks up my train of thought you can train yourself to do that but really i find that this works best when you just go with the flow and focus on getting into the groove of talking out your thoughts and the more comfortable you get with doing this the faster. This is gonna go and you ll see right now that i m just kind of talking and you know i m not it s not everything i m saying it s not on point..
But it s coming out and i ve got two paragraphs now so this might have taken me you know half an hour 15 minutes 10 minutes who knows to write this all out. But now i ve got this kind of draft going here and i ve literally taken maybe 30 seconds to kind of get this all together new paragraph. So that s this is the really cool thing about the sort of the magic of speech to text programs and you ll see you know when you go back and read your what you ve talked spoken out here. It s not all gonna be a hundred percent accurate.
But i find that you can get pretty good accuracy. If you re careful with how you if you sort of just get comfortable with speaking in a certain way you know like is movie star down. Here. You know if you can okay.
So what s going off there a little bit. But if you speak in a comfortable pace and take the time to think your thoughts through you can end up with getting like ninety percent accuracy and either way this is so much more like i ve sit down. And i do this and i ll end up with like several thousand words in a couple minutes. Sometimes and even if like half of that is junk.
And you have to get rid of it you know this is a great way to just get your thoughts out and get content. There so you can just start editing. It so new paragraph. It s a it s a great way to sort of break down that paralysis and sometimes you ll see it stops here because it s thinking.
So you know you ll find that sometimes it ll stop and start. And you might want to just be careful and keep a close eye to what s happening here on the screen as you talk so that you make sure that doesn t go off the rails. But even you know it being not entirely a perfect system. I found it works really well and you ll see that i can speak my thoughts out so much faster than i can write them and you can really you know you can benefit from this um.
So you really well how do you you know how do you benefit from this most is by putting your thoughts together like in rough bullet points. So you have kind of an itinerary for what you re gonna speak and then oops. I just clicked off the windows so it stopped um and then just talking through your stuff at a comfortable pace. So i mean look here in about you know not even a couple minutes.
I have have several paragraphs of gist you know this is gobbly books. I m just talking and let it record to show you as an example..
But there s quite a bit of content here see ya and then once you re done you can save and export and clean this up. And it s just a really quick way to dive in and get your thoughts going new paragraph. And i find that when i m sitting down to use this for whatever. It s freelancing or writing books or chapters.
I i just get so much down in a very short period of time like you can end up with many many thousands of words. If you just straight up for like an hour. You could probably speak out you know if you practice and get you good at this you can actually speak out most of your book or most of your article or whatever and get it all down. Very quickly even if it s kind of you know sloppy.
I mean just imagine like your first draft of anything is gonna be kind of rough for the most part so just doing it this way you know worth trying if you just want to get things done quickly. And then cut and paste and copy and just take the best bits and leave the rest and you re not gonna feel bad about ditching this stuff. That s not accurate or not good. If you can pull out the good nuggets and use that because you re gonna still have a ton of content.
Even if you remove like half of it. Because there s a lot like i m just taking. Evan yeah. Rambling here.
But i m talking for a few minutes. And i ve got i don t know how many paragraphs. Quite a few paragraphs here so let me pause and see yeah so i m gonna stop in so. I ve got what one two three four four or five paragraphs and let s just take a look at the word count granted.
You know keep in mind. These are so i ve written. I ve typed. You know just in the time is take me to ramble here for a few minutes.
I ve spoken out about a thousand words just about well shy of a thousand words and there s definitely you know stuff here that s not you know there s gonna be some not accurate parts and there s no punctuation. But the cool thing is if you stop and just don t speak..
It s not like you have that pressure to keep going like right now. I m recording videos so i m talking nonstop if i was doing this off for my own benefit. I would stop and pause. And think my thoughts out and then speak you know with intention and clearness versus just kind of rambling and that makes a big difference.
So you re gonna more you do this and more you tinker with it you ll find that it can be really awesome. And you don t have to spend any money to do this this is all free if you have a good microphone. You know that is worth investing. But as you ll probably see from other videos.
When i do before like having investing in a good microphone is something really worth doing if you re into podcasting. If you re into video creation. If you do skype interviews. I mean any like that s one that the one thing you re gonna want spend some money on as a creative person if you do anything online for sure.
So you might already have a good mic or you can get one or borrow one or spend a little bit of money to get something decent and try this out because you know i know there s quite a few authors that have been doing this and getting really good results. And it s the kind of thing like doing anything the more you do it the better you re gonna get it with practice. So yeah i ll stop rambling here. But that was you our first chef writers thanks so much for listening and watching the video.
If you d like to subscribe that would be awesome. I m trying to build this channel up and these first videos are gonna be a little bit rough cuz. I m just trying to get in the field of doing some usual youtube content. But yeah i d really appreciate if you subscribe and share.
