” m back with my trusty whiteboard. It s lesson planned time everybody today. We are are talking about how to write the perfect cover letter. Let s see where we go with this all right so it is cover letter time so everybody always asks about the cover letter.
And i know that we have we made one of our hit me on one of our first videos. But one of the first videos that i think we did in the office. I remember it because i had way too much highlighter under my eyes in that video. But uh with on cover letters.
And so we will link this below. Think of this video is kind of a sister video to that video just to really help enhance your ability to write a great cover letter. So for any cover letter. I want to go through the step by step process here the first thing you re gonna do is you re gonna do your intro.
Now. The intro is gonna be a couple things i hate to whom this may concern it just makes me feel stiff and awkward. But i get it if you don t know who you re sending the email to if you re applying for nbc or jp morgan or one of these big companies you might have to use it. So you re either gonna use that too this may concern.
Blah blah. Blah. Don t love that one or if you know the internship coordinators name. So if you re applying to a smaller company or a mid sized company.
Where they actually say send resumes to gavin smith or send resumes to marisol right here s what you would write you would just say. Either. You know. Dear marisol or hi.
Marisol or just marathon. Right. This is what i prefer it s just marisol comma. I don t think you guys need to go by last names anymore.
You don t need to say you know hi miss. So and so or mrs. So and so i think that in 2018. We can go by first name so marisol right so that s gonna be your intro.
The second step is gonna be your you know your first paragraph. Which is going to be i can t spell. Which is gonna be connecting the dots. You re gonna want to say who you are your major and where you go to school and then three is you re gonna write the why and the most important thing here is the y.
So as an example i would say i m lauren burger than the major in school. I m a communications major at the university of central florida and the y. I really want to work at your company because right and then you gotta fill in the blank or i could say something like i m i could just go right into the y. I really want to work at your company because i m a communications major at the university of central florida.
I ve done my research and i know you re one of the leading companies in the field. This is what connects the dots from you to the company know the next thing that i want you guys to do is address any outside circumstances. So what i mean by this is and i talked about this in the other cover letter video. If you re a student and you re from florida.
Like me. But you re applying for an internship in la you you have to explain that you know yes i go to school in florida. But i am going to be in los angeles going juvie that is the way to do it not i might be no that sounds hesitant. I am going to be in los angeles.
From this state to this state. Okay so you want to address any outside circumstances. Another example would be maybe you know that a company only accepts seniors and your sophomore applying i know that i m a sophomore. But i feel i m qualified because of xy and z.
So again you want to use this first paragraph to address any outside circumstances all right second paragraph. So the second paragraph is about your professional characteristics right this is the profesh it s the professional paragraph. So in this paragraph you want to talk about your professional experience. And what makes you the right person for the job.
We ve talked a lot before about that elevator pitch..
It s similar here you know you have one paragraph. You don t want to talk about a hundred different things. No one s gonna be able to follow that so i say that you talk about two to three experiences that make you the right person for the job. So maybe.
It s an internship that you had maybe. It s a part time job that taught you responsibility and then maybe. It s a really interesting course that you re taking in school. So maybe you re trying to get a pr internship.
So you talk about your one. Other you know communications related internship. That you ve had you talked about the part time job that you have that you always maintain and that teaches you about the importance of responsibility or punctuality and then maybe you reference a course. The pr class that you took in school that was really what got you interested in public relations in the first place okay so in the professional paragraph.
The professor op you really want to talk about your experiences and then just as a i want you guys to throw in an accomplishment. So an example of an accomplishment is at my internship. I was tasked with creating their instagram page and i grew their following from 300 followers to 1300. Followers okay so in the accomplishment.
You really want to give like an a to b example. So you did something and you took something from x to y ok. So that s the professional paragraph. Then in the third paragraph of your cover letter and i want to remind you guys that these paragraphs don t have to be very long.
I would say four to eight sentences each is really all you need. But the third paragraph is gonna be about you right we already talked about your professional characteristics. But what about you makes you the right person for this position. What are those qualities that you know you have that maybe others don t or what are the qualities that your family friends say that you have or your close friends are always telling you right so maybe.
It s that you re energetic. You know you re hard working. And you re trustworthy right. So maybe come up with three words that really describe you and then i would give an example you want a real life.
Example of how these paid off. So you could say something like i m known to my friends and family to be very hard working. Whenever. I have a project at school at my internship or at my job.
I always make sure to complete it you know before anything else so you want to talk about your personal characteristics. And then give an example of how those make you the best candidate for that position finally. The close is not going to be a full paragraph. It s probably going to be a sentence or two you re thinking people for their time.
Thank you for time um. I say this in our thank you note tutorial as well everyone is super sensitive about their time. So you want to make sure that you thank someone for taking the time to read this and just like that think you know reiterate your excitement in the possessive. I m really excited to potentially intern with your company fast and your name and so six.
Is the signature and i tend to always use the word bass. Some people use warmly or sincerely any of that is fine. But that s really how you do the cover letter. Now one thing.
I just want to circle back to that we didn t mention is customizing okay the place that you really have the best opportunity to customize it s gonna be in that first paragraph that s your best place to just name drop write name drop. The company name when i m looking at a cover letter and i don t see intern queen in there. I know that they didn t write this for me. They wrote this to a hundred different people so just by inserting.
The name of the company in that first paragraph that s gonna really help and then i challenge you just for some you know frame of reference. When you re rating your cover. Letter print out the job listing have it right there they re telling you what they re looking for and that can give you some more ideas in terms of what you want to include in the cover letter. So really let that job posting drive the content.
Let s get those cover letters. Ready you guys got a lot of work to do and again. I m happy to answer any questions. Thank you ” .
